VRATSA - Bulgaria » The town of Vratsa is located on the banks of the Leva river, at the base of a wall of mountains known as the Vratsa mountain. It is 116 km northeast of Sofia, 40 km north of Montana and 15 km north-west of Mezdra. Vratsa is the largest town in northwest Bulgaria. The landmarks of the town are the historical museum, housing unique golden Thracian treasures, the 17th century fortified tower of Meschiite, the Revival Ethnographic complex. The town's main attraction for visitors is the Nature Park Vrachanski Balkan, a starting point for the routes to Vratsata gorge and the famous Ledenika cave. South of Vratsa is Mt Okolchitsa, where Hristo Botev, one of the most beloved revolutionary figures in Bulgaria's struggle for liberation, met his death.
