BACHKOVO » The village of Bachkovo is situated 30 km southwest of Plovdiv, 175 km from Sofia and 10 km south of Asenovgrad on the banks of Chepelarska river in the Rhodope mountains. Most tourists come to Bachkovo to visit the famous Bachkovo Monastery built in 1083 by Grigorii Bakuriani. Destroyed by the Turkish, the monastery was restored in the 16th century. In the principal Virgin Mary Church from 1604, tourists can admire the impressive wall paintings of an unknown master and the Virgin Mary icon, believed to be wonder-working. The monastery has two other smaller churches - St Archangels and St Nikola with preserved paintings from Zahari Zograf. The monastery museum houses rare religious items. Bachkovo Monastery is the second largest monastery in Bulgaria that has been declared a world monument by UNESCO.
