The third month of the year is a special one in Bulgaria.
On March 1 every year Bulgarians worldwide celebrate Granny Marta's Day.
Granny Marta(Grandmother March) is the symbol of nature's rebirth at the end of the winter and the beginning of spring.
The holiday is also celebrated in Bulgaria's North neighbor of Romania.
It is said that Marta's mood changes often, which accounts for the strange weather during that month.
The month is considered as the only female month of the year.
In order to celebrate Granny Marta's Day Bulgarians present each other with tassels made of red and white wool, called martenitsa- a symbol of health, good luck and the coming spring.
The white color symbolizes the man's beginning, power and purity at the same time.
The red colour is the woman's beginning, blood, the conceive and birth.
By the end of the month you can see thousands of martenitsi hanging on trees and bushes. It is believed that they need to be hung on the first blooming twig for good luck.
