Powell/Harris (September 2003)Hotel name: Exselsior *** Hotel location: Golden sands resort, Bulgaria Comment: We were two families travelling to Bulgaria for the first time. Four adults with 6 kids between us. We had booked 3 rooms, with 2 adts & 2 kids in 2 rooms & 2 11yr olds in their own room. The rooms were fine, although the 11 year olds had the best room at the front of the hotel, so much cooler in the afternoon, with a bigger balcony than ours, which we hi-jacked most evenings for our card games!! The hotel was very clean & rooms cleaned daily, with clean towels & bed linen. The hotel could do with aircon, as when you return in the afternoon the heat in the lobby almost knocks you out & our rooms at the back of the hotel were unbearably hot. The food in the hotel was ok, although as most people would agree definately geared to the Germans. Best bet for breakfast probably bread/toast, although the hotel has no objection to you bringing in food from Aldos the local shop. Evening meals were a bit hit & miss, but always a salad bar & at least one good option, meals often tasting better than they look!!!! We ate out a few times & always very good value & nice food. However would not recommend Restaurant Lucky where we had Ice-Cream Sundaes & went down with food poisoning ( not so lucky for us ) The hotel pool was fairly small, but as you have to pay for the sunbeds you might just as well use any pool. We went to The Havana, about 5 mins walk from the hotel, which was fantastic, very clean & a fab restaurant,eg pizzas £1.20 ,really friendly staff & meals for 10 of us about £20.00, so very good value!! Would also recommend the poolside massage, 45mins about £11.00, very good value & very relaxing. Would not recommend booking trips through your rep as quite expensive & they are very easy to organise yourself. We went to Varna & the Dolphinarium, brilliant park in Varna with rides for kids, very cheap, but Dolphinarium a bit overpriced for 20minute show. Jeep Safari a definate waste of money, too much on road & basically a glorified picnic, with a dodgy dartboard & 2 darts & shooting at plastic bottles-don't bother! A trip to Nessabar was great & we used Vessaline & his mini bus, a lovely man who speaks very good English so we learnt a lot about Bulgarian way of life. He drove us around from 11am-2130 for £70.00 for 10 of us & took us to a fantastic restaurant on a hilltop overlooking the sea. A trip to Nessabar booked through the hotel would have cost a lot more & we wouldn't have got all the extras. All in all a good holiday & we would go again, but perhaps self catering as food so cheap to buy & to eat out. ------------------ By: D Morgan (October 2003) Hotel name: Exselsior *** Hotel location: The Excelsior hotel is on the outskirts of the resort which on the plus side means it is quiet day and night, which can be a haven as the resort is fairly noisy. On the bad side, it does take a good 10 minutes to walk to, part of which is up a semi-steep hill (and the pavements are definately not made for high heels or the intoxicated!). Inside the hotel is quite impressive. It's very clean, bright and welcoming. All the staff are very accommodating and there is a 24 hour reception. The rooms were very clean (linen and towels changed daily) and of a high standard. The only problem we had was that our hotel room faced the sun as it was going down, so that from 4.00pm - 7.00pm the sun shone into our room and made the heat unbearable as we were getting ready to eat/go out. There was no air conditioning and the prices for a fan were extortionate (buying one in the resort was much cheaper!). We were on a half board basis (breakfast and dinner) and although there was a variety of foods which was all cooked very well, it really did all get very repetative. Not really a problem though as we tended to eat out most of the time. Bulgaria really is very very cheap. Large beers (thier own brand which is very drinkable and stronger than you think!) was only 80p in some bars, while a vodka could be bought for around £1.00 (the measure was usually that of a triple at home!). Do eat and drink at as many different places as possible as prices can vary quite a lot. Food is also very good value with kebabs around 80p, large pizza's for about £1.50 and steak meals only £3.00! If you are in Golden Sands, walk down to the Sizzlin' Steakhouse where we got 6 steak meals, 2 rounds of drinks and desserts (plus garlic bread and 2 bottles of wine) for only £40.00! Kids love it here as a very large ice cream with different flavours worked out at 40p! There is lots to do for children in this resort and you do feel very safe for them to wander around as locals really do keep an eye on them! Only small niggles we had was restaurant/bars harrassing you to go into their place (seems ignorant but you really do have to be firm and then ignore them!) and the fact that everywhere you go you have to pay for sunbeds, even your own hotel. This seems to be because you can use the pool at any hotel, but with sunbeds costing around £1.00 each every day (there were six of us!) it can get rather expensive for the fortnight. But be warned - the price for sunbeds doubles on the beach (which are gorgeous) so take your towels instead. All in all a fab holiday where you could eat, drink, party, slouch or do whatever you want with little effort and money. I would deffo go back again and recommend to anyone! ------------------ By: Emiki Solo Hotel name: Exselsior *** Hotel location: Golden sands resort, Bulgaria Comment: This hotel is incredible!
