There will be public buses between Bulgarian town of Russe and Romanian town of Giurgiu but the “Danube bridge” tax will not be removed.
It is possible till the autumn there to be an inter-town public transport between the two Danube towns at the price of a normal town ticket. However, the taxed against which the people from Russe as well as the Bulgarian and Romanian business protest, will not be waived.
This claimed in Russe the Bulgarian deputy prime minister and minister of foreign affairs Ivaylo Kalfin, cited by BTA.
According to him, the taxes will remain because of the Romanian side which is firmly against their removal.
Even if Bulgaria waives the taxes, at the northern shore of the Danube they will continue collecting the tax, claimed Kalfin. The deputy prime minister explained that the public buses will be made possible only after the state budget sponsors Russe municipality for the payment of the bus taxes for crossing the Danube bridge.
A month ago, the European commission announced its decision that the tax can exist provided it doesn’t hurdle the free movement of people and provided it is only for maintenance of the bridge’s equipment.
