SHIROKA LUKA » The village of Shiroka Luka is located in the central Rhodope mountains, in the valley of the Shirokolushka river, 23 km northwest of Smolyan, 15 km west of Pamporovo ski resort, 22 km southeast of Devin, 250 km from Sofia and 80 km from Plovdiv. Shiroka Luka is an architectural and ethnographic museum with more than 100 monuments of culture. Some of the authentic Rhodopean houses, situated on the banks of the river, date back to the 18th century. Tourists can visit the old School of Panteleimon (1888), the old Holy Virgin Church (1834), or St Nikola's Church. Worth seeing is the performance of the students of the Musical school for folklore songs and instruments, caba gaida (the famous local bagpipe) and kukeri festival on the first Sunday of March. According to the local legend the last refugee of the Russian royal family settled in Shiroka Luka and died in the village.
