Located in the central part of northeastern Bulgaria, Shumen is 381 km northeast of Sofia, 100 km west of Varna, and 115 km southeast of Rousse. Shumen is set on a major transport junction – on the main route between the capital Sofia and Varna and on the main highway Rousse – Bourgas – Istanbul. The nearest airport is Varna International airport from which you can be transferred to Shumen in a little more than one hour. The city’s location, at the base of a low spur of the Balkan Range, about halfway between the Black Sea coast and the Danube and the Black Sea coast and Veliko Tarnovo, also means it is within a couple of hours’ transfer time from several unique destinations like the ancient Madara Horseman bas-relief and the ruins of the old Bulgarian capitals Pliska and Veliki Preslav. The city of Shoumen itself, lying right in the heart of the region, is soaked with history and features a spectacular medieval fortress and represents an interesting blend of history and modernity.
