LOVECH - Bulgaria » The town of Lovech is situated on the banks of Osam river, 160 km northeast of Sofia, 66 km northwest of Gabrovo, 87 km west of Veliko Tarnovo and 36 km from Pleven and Troyan. It is poetically called The Town of the Lilacs. The Lilac Days of Music are held in May every year. The most interesting sights to visit in Lovech are the houses from the revival period and the National Liberation Museum in the architectural and historic reserve in the old quarter of Varosha and the only covered bridge in Bulgaria, originally built by Kolyo Ficheto. Outside the town, on the right bank of the Osam river, is the beautiful Stratesh Park (the Lilac Park) with ruins of medieval fortress, monuments and a small zoo. Bash Bounar Park is close to the town on the way to Troyan. The Devetashka Cave is 20 km northeast of Lovech. It has the largest hall in Europe and an enormous entrance, seven openings on the ceiling, 11 underground lakes, unique cave formations and was inhabited during the Paleolithic, Neolithic and Bronze periods. The Suevata dupka cave is in the village of Brestnitsa. Staro Stefanovo architecture reserve is 20 km southeast of Lovech. Kukrinskoto Hanche museum is located in the village of Kukrina. The village of Oresha, 7 km away from the town, is famous for the Crafts and Applied Arts National Fair.
