Obzor is situated 60 km south of Varna or
alternatively, 75km north of Bourgas. It lies in the skirts of
the eastern part of the Stara Planina Mountain with the mountain
ridge raising to the west of the city and the Dvoynitsa river
bounding it to the north. The beach of Obzor is followed
by a small nestling cove and a beach named Irakli after an
ancient village of the same name. The St. Nikola cape is several
kilometers further to the south where the Balkan Mountains slope
into the Black Sea. The beach line in Obzor is the largest one
on the Black Sea coast. The shore is low and sandy with a fully
open horizon to the east. The sea is calm and it is perfect for
swimming, surfing and water skiing. The origins of Obzor, which
the ancient Greeks knew as Heliopolis ("town of the sun"), can
be seen in the small park which is lined with columns and
statuary fragments from a Roman temple to Jupiter which once
graced the spot. The Romans also built a fortress in the
vicinity to protect their sea trading routes between
Constantinople and the Danube. Medieval Bulgarians constructed
their own Kozyak fortress nearby. |
