MOMCHILGRAD - Bulgaria » The small town of Momchilgrad is situated in the valley of the Vurbitsa river in the eastern Rhodope mountains, 15 km southeast of Kardzhali, 280 km from Sofia and only 40 minutes drive from the Aegean Sea. The main roads from Smolyan to the Turkish town of Odrin and from Kardzhali to the Greek town of Komotini pass through the town. The most popular sight in the region is the village of Tatul (8 km northeast) with traces of a medieval fortress and a Thracian sanctuary, dedicated to Orpheus.
