BANSKO SKI RESORT » Bansko is the newest ski resort in Bulgaria located at 925 m above sea level between Pirin, Rila and the Rhodopes mountains, nestled in the shadow of ice-caped Mt Vihren, the highest peak in Pirin. Bansko provides a superb combination of the virgin mountain nature and the atmosphere of the ancient Bulgarian small town. An enchanting historical spot, the town itself attracts visitors by its 120 cultural monuments, its museums and the permanent ethnographic exhibitions. In addition, Bansko is an excellent mountain resort with a short hot summer and long mild winter. Skiing is practiced around Bansko from December until March with abundant snow falls, providing a constant winter snow-cover up to 2 m thick. Pirin mountains have a predominantly Alpine character with 2 peaks towering above 2900 m and though all grades are catered for, Bansko is the best resort in Bulgaria for advanced skiers. Instructors speak various foreign languages and there is a range of equipment for hire. There are 14 km of ski runs in Bansko with 7 lifts with the longest ski run of 2.5 km, and two practice slopes with ski-tows. A new lift and a run equipped for night skiing has been lunched in season 2003.

There are approximately 15 000 hotel beds ready for 2007-2008 winter season in Bansko. This number will probably double when most of the new hotels and apartment buildings are completed. The majority of the hotels in Bansko are 4-star and offer a wide range of facilities for this standard - spa, indoor-swimming pool, sauna, Jacuzzi, golf club, etc. Over 13 million Euros of Bansko municipal money have been invested to develop the resort infrastructure. Investments in constraction projects already exceeded 1 billion Euros.

There are plenty of pubs, restaurants and night clubs in Bansko and all offer great value for money. A large beer of 500ml is less than £1, and a basic meal is approximately 2-3 £. Food varies from local traditional cuisine (kebapche, kyufte, tarator, shopska salad) to Greek and Mediterranean specialties, Italian cuisine. BANSKO ATTRACTIONS

Bansko is an enchanting historical spot attracting visitors by its 120 cultural monuments, museums and permanent ethnographic exhibitions. The Virgin Mary church built in 6th century and restored at the end of 8th century has wonderful woodcarvings of the iconostasis. The native house of Neofit Rilski - preserved in its initial outer appearance is situated in the immediate neighbourhood of the famous St. Trinity church. The Velyanova Kashta is a monument dating back from the Renaissance, one of the most beautiful houses having a rich fresco decoration and fine woodcarvings. The Sirleshtova Kashta (the House of Sirleshtov) is a small fortress. The special role of this house in Bansko is marked by the one-meter thick stone walls, the narrow and dark loop-holes, the iron wires on the windows and the heavy doors.

TRAVEL TO BANSKO - TRANSPORTATION

Regular bus service is operating between Sofia and Bansko during the day. Shuttle service and private transfers are also available at decent rates - as low as 12 EUR per person A private transfer between Sofia and Bansko takes between 2 to 3 hours, depending on the weather conditions.
