Durankulak is a small town in the northern part of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. It is 100 km north of Varna - the sea capital of Bulgaria and only 8 km from the Bulgarian-Romanian cross-border check point Vama Veche. Durankulak is famous with the natural preserve Durankulak Lake, home of the red-breasted geese and other protected birds. There is a very important archaeological site nearby (300 meters from from Branta Birding Lodge) - the Big Island, representing the first known stone buildings in Europe.
