SLIVEN

The town of Sliven is situated in the eastern part of the Thracian Plain, at the feet of Sliven Balkan, 279 km east of Sofia, and 114 km west of Burgas. It once sheltered so many chieftains that Bulgarians called it the "town of the hundred voivods" after the number of their chieftains. Probably the most famous feature of the town is the national park Blue Rocks, situated northeast with extremely interesting rock formations like the Ring, a jagged arch nearly 8m tall and associated with several legends one of which claims that ancient mariners moored their boats here during the Flood. The Blue Rocks offer excellent opportunities for rest, sports and tourism - there is a ski-track, a lake with boats, classified rock objects for mountain climbing. Other places of interest include the Hadzhi Dimitar House-Museum, the thousand-year-old oak tree in the town's centre that survived the burning of medieval Sliven by the Turks, the History Museum and the nearby Mineral baths of Sliven, the 19th century cultural centers of Kotel, Zheravna, Medven, and Katunishte.
